Summary.
The
importance of the Kenton Bar bunker cannot be emphasised enough.
20 feet under Newcastle, Air Vice Marshall Saul commanded
his fighter forces and repelled a massive Luftwaffe attack,
an attack of which the Germans never attempted again. Demonstrating
that the Kenton Bar bunker leant a hand in determining the
outcome of the Battle of Britain.
Latter years saw the bunker transform into a cold war asset,
helping to maintain the defence and integrity of the UK.
For me it is sad to see such an important site become storage
space for various government and council departments and to
be eventually stripped of its fixtures and fitments and the
doors welded closed. I suspect it will remain hidden and forgotten,
residents living above and around the site, unaware that below
them there used to be a bunker which helped to shape and mould
the world in which we now live.
During the course of my investigation I have met many helpful
and knowledgeable people. I would like to thank them all for
their help, including Mr Ord who kindly showed me the Boulmer
airfield and supplied me with maps and additional information
and John Watson of Wimpey Homes for allowing me to enter the
Kenton Bar bunker.
Finally, if you decide to visit the bunker or airfield for
yourself, please remember not to trespass or cause annoyance
to local residents, business or land owners. Thank you for
your time.
